Utilization of Funds

Your money will help to forward a special course of research, which is promising to cure diabetes in an effective, safe and sparing manner because it is aimed to induce the body's own healing without the need of foreign tissue. Foreign sources in terms of islets from human cadavers or animals or stem cells from fetus are not available in sufficient quantity and would induce the immune system to fight against. Furthermore, the recipient's safety cannot be assured as the long term impact of these interventions is not clarified. It is not sure that foreign cells can contribute to the equilibrium state adequate to achieve and keep health.

In order to create a sparing and safe solution much effort is still needed to explore the human body's basic systems from scratch and to learn more about the growth, development and function of body cells, in particular blood cells and their genetic background. Even if we have good insight in the pathophysiology of diabetic animal models, much is unknown in the machineries of human cells, and we know only shortly that the differences between human and animal physiology is much greater than widely assumed. Therefore, when medication is brought to the clinic nothing is known about substantial changes that follows these interventions. Interventions in the immune system are systemic and thus not reversable in most of the cases. Overhasty application must not be carried out. Your donation to our research society means that you support this save way of exploring the physiology basically before bringing medication to the clinic. We must know the consequences of such systemic interventions. This is an often disregarded priciple in the today's medical and pharmacological business.

The SBDR is constraint by constitution to support those projects which focus on the most promising research courses to attain health and guaranties that 90% expenditures directly supports innovative research projects. The field of relevant research capable to achieve the society's Mission Principles will be rigorously reviewed by peer scientists. With your donation you contribute to achieve and keep this high standard.
